Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands with its year round mild climate, is the haven for nature lovers, hikers and bikers alike. Biking enthusiasts will be delighted to know that many protected areas of Tenerife can actually be explored by bicycles; with rules and regulations to be adhered to, of course!
There are various trails and distances to suit every levels, with plenty of scenic and thrill options to choose from. Take in the vast panoramic valley of La Orotava, the evergreen mountains of Anaga or the spectacular gorge of Barranco Arena. Visit traditional farming village of La Guancha, cave houses of Chinamada, or typical Canarian houses dotting the slopes of Masca valley. Ride “above the clouds” in Izaña, trail secluded tracks once used by the Guanches, get your heart pumping riding up red-crisps volcanic earth trails of La Esperanza, or burn rubbers down the gradients (up to 25%) near Las Cañadas. Bike through La Cumbre ridge that runs through 3-zone vegetation or the sloping ridge of Cordilla Dorsal with impressive panoramic views to the north and south coast of Tenerife island.

DIY (do it yourself) bike trip
Tenerife is a safe place for biking activities. However, when you are high up in the mountains, the weather does change very quickly and you need to know what you are doing, where you are going, not to mention, your skills and limits. We highly recommend beginners who are not familiar with the island to join a bike tour. Alternatively, there are good value self-guided cycling training and tour packages with accommodation, bike rental, and a dossier of detailed routes to guide you through your cycling holiday.

Road bike
The Canary Islands and Tenerife are very popular with road cyclists because of the mild climate throughout the year and the extreme height differences. The racing professionals appreciate Tenerife as a training ground, even cycling greats such as Lance Armstrong and triathletes like Thomas Hellriegel and Lothar Leder have been here to prepare for their races. Furthermore, Tenerife offers good and safe road networks where you can discover many of the island’s highlights. It is possible to bike through the pine forests in Vilaflor or part of the National Park on Mount Teide.
