Description:
This 4.5 hours guided tour will show you the highlights of Sant’Antioco, a city located on the largest Sardinian island and linked to the mainland by an artificial isthmus. The Phoenicians founded this city in 9th century BC and important archaeological remains from the Phoenician, Punic, Roman, and Byzantine age can still be seen on the island.
The tour begins in Tophet, a Phoenician sanctuary that contains the ashes of stillborn infants and babies lost soon after birth. We then visit “villaggio ipogeo”, an underground village by the ancient Punic necropolis of Sant'Antioco. Underground chambers were digged between the 6th and the 3rd century BC for burial purposes. These chambers were later used as urns depository by the Romans, and later became the shelters of farmers and shepherds to fence against the Arabs attacks.
Later, we visit the Chiara Vigo’s “sea silk” factory. Chiara is the only person in the world who weaves this fine linen. She will personally show her technique, which has been passed down orally through generations, to the tour group.
