Punta de las Mujeres

Overview:

Punta de las Mujeres village is located on Lanzarote’s east coast, 28 kilometres north of the island’s capital Arrecife. The small fishing village which belong to the municipality of Haría has about 1,100 inhabitants. Its white-washed houses and traditional Canarian charm attracts many visitors and many locals like to spend their summer vacation here.

Punta de las Mujeres means “Cape of Women” in Spanish, because this is where the wives used to wait for their husbands to return from the sea. This nautical flair can still be noticed today. At the harbour fishermen can be observed mending fishing nets, unloading boats or processing their caught fish; no wonder Punta de las Mujeres is especially popular with those who like fish dishes. The village has a lot to offer when it comes to culinary specialties. Holiday-makers should try the fresh fish at the local restaurants and tapas bars.

Most of the village’s activities take place in and around the water. This coastal region is especially attractive for fishermen, windsurfers and surfers. Due to its location on the north of Lanzarote, strong winds tend to generate very powerful waves, therefore surfing and windsurfing should only be attempted by the experienced ones, and with care. For swimming, there are a few pleasant natural lava stone swimming pools dotted along the rocky coast. As the stones can be slippery when wet, bathers are to take care when entering or coming out from the pools, and use the handrails installed.

Punta de las Mujeres’s biggest festival, Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Pino is celebrated each year at the end of August or beginning of September. During this festival which generally lasted for 10 days, various events and competitions are held along with procession with traditional costumes and music.

Punta de las Mujeres has many interesting places and tourist attractions close by. Only ten minutes to the South, for example, there is the small village of Arrieta, which has a very nice beach to offer.
