Charco del Palo

Overview

In the north of Lanzarote island within the municipality of Haría, about 20 kilometres from the capital Arrecife, there is a naturist (nudist) seaside resort Charco del Palo. This unique naturist (nudist) village is known as the island’s naturist (nudist) centre given it is the only place on Lanzarote that has been granted nudist approval in the 1980s. Everyone can move around nude as he/she likes in the village.

Charco del Palo has been spared from the mass tourism with a few but fine selections of villas, apartments and bungalows dotted within its peaceful setting. Most of these lodgments only deal with travel agencies specialised in naturist (nudist) holidays. There are restaurants, shops, supermarket, car rental and bars in the village, saving clienteles the hassle of putting clothes on, while maintaining privacy and exclusivity.

The village is located directly by the sea and enjoys year round sunshine. Holiday-makers are to be cautious when swimming in the open sea due to the rough and rocky coast. There are, however, many natural swimming pools and coves that can be used independently from the tides. These are usually safer and warmer than the ocean.

The coast around Charco del Palo is a true paradise for hikers. Beautiful walks and hikes can be taken along the volcanic cliffs and the sandy coastline. The coast also offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic ocean and Lanzarote’s landscape. The reefs surrounding the village also attracts many scuba-divers and snorkeling fans.

Should you like to venture out of the village, there are many interesting attractions nearby. There’s a Cactus Garden (Jardín de Cactus) in Guatiza town, just 10 minutes drive away in south. In the north, Jameos del Agua and the Green Caves (Cuevas de los Verdes) await. Further north is Mirador del Rio, offering beautiful panorama of the island of Graciosa. Alternatively, hop on a boat to the island of Graciosa from Orzola or simply sample some fresh seafood in this small fishing village.

How to get there

Charco del Palo can be reached by car. To get there from Arrecife, take the LZ-1 up north towards Guatiza, and leave the motorway before reaching the village centre of Mala. The journey takes about half an hour.
