Nightlife

La Orotava is not known for its nightlife though it does have a few well priced bars offering a selection of good local beers and wines. Most nightlife is hotel based therefore making it advisable to travel to nearby Puerto de la Cruz for a livelier scene. Most cafes double up into bars with emphasis on good food and friendly service.

El Paladar

A café/bar offering customers local and imported beers and a strong wine list to enjoy whilst they soak up the impressive views of the San Agustín Church.

Bar Kiosco

Based in the heart of the town on Plaza de la Constitución, Bar Kiosco is one of the livelier places in town.

Bar Parada

Situated on Calle San Agustín, Bar Parada is an outdoor terrace area and quality tapas and beer offer a welcoming atmosphere for the young set to relax after a days work.

Shopping

Shopping opportunities in La Orotava are limited as the town is more of a one day stop destination for tourists’, though an array of small trinket and souvenir shops are dotted around the newer quarter. Traditional handy-craft can be sought out in many of the museums where charming leather goods and quality wickerwork are all available at reasonable prices.

The Canary Islands are also known for their exquisite embroidery (bordados) as well as their fine thread-work (calados), produced by the towns skilled local women with Casa de los Balcones being the best place to purchase such goods. Beware however, of street sellers selling imitation goods of inferior quality imported from factories and claiming it is produced locally.

Quality pottery can also be found in La Orotava as highly skilled local potters still to this day produce excellent and distinctive household items that make for perfect gifts. Ganigos (household pots), as well as hand carved jewellery decorated with traditional Guanche symbols can be found in the many craft shops that line the streets.
