Things to do in Isla de los Lobos

The lack of facilities has meant the island's nature essence and ecology are well-preserved, making it home to many valuable bird species. Many come to Isla de los Lobos for a day-trip to hike about the island and/or chill out on the beautiful beach of Playa de la Concha, while outdoor lovers may opt to camp on this pleasant natural playground (camping permit is to be obtained in advance). The island also boast several great surfing spots for the experienced surfers.

Sailing and water taxi

The way to get to Isla de Los Lobos is by ferry or water taxi from Corralejo. There are also a number of boat and sailing excursions taking you around the Isla de los Lobos, where you get swim, snorkel and kayak. Some tours also stop by Puertito where you'll have a chance to pop down on the island for a walk. For a more fancy experience why not hire a charter boat to explore the island?

Hiking

The island is only 4.4km², which means you can walk all the way around it in a few hours. A typical hike starts from Playa de la Concha (on your left as arrive El Puertito harbour) where you ascent the Montaña La Caldera. There is an option to climb all the way up to the summit, or you could descent from the other side of the mountain towards the Martiño lighthouse (northern tip of the island), and return to El Puertito via Las Lagunitas. Make sure you stick to the designated footpaths so as not to disturb the delicate ecological environment.

Montaña La Caldera (Cauldron Mountain)
If you are an avid hiker and enjoy a challenge then Montaña La Caldera should be a suitable conquest. At 127m high some people may struggle to complete the hike. However, when you get to the top the breathtaking views of the island, ocean and neighbouring Fuerteventura are well worth the walk. Make sure you bring enough food and water as well as a hat, sunglasses and a lot of sunscreen, as there is no shade and can get very hot.

Bird Watching

The island is officially part of ZEPA (Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves), and is home to many endangered species of bird. The rocks and cliffs that dominate the landscape are used as nesting places by the many variations of seabird; the Storm Petrel, the Bulwer’s Petrel, the Caspian Gull and the Osprey to name but a few. Rare and endangered birds to look out for include the Great grey Shrike, the Blue Heron, the Curlew, the Cream Coloured Curser, the Tern and the Egret.

Surfing

Some people visit the island to catch the waves produced by the strong off shore winds, but although this is an excellent place to surf, it is not for beginners. There are no life guards, equipment hiring facilities or surfing schools, and only confident, competent surfers should surf here.

Camping

La Carpinteria is the island’s only campsite, and travellers are welcome to spend the night. However, in an attempt to protect the environment, no facilities have been installed. If you plan to camp here make sure you obtain a permit from the Oficina de Medio Ambiente del Cabildo de Fuerteventura, bring everything you need and use the designated area. Please take nothing but photographs and leave nothing but footprints.
