Description:

In the island of Malta and Gozo, UNESCO has certified at least seven stone-made temples hence a Malta Prehistoric Temple Tour is a must if you visit the island. These megalithic temples are among the oldest "free-standing" stone structures of our time. Dated back to 5500 years ago, these amazing temples of Malta and Gozo are older than the Pyramids and the Stonehenge. Inside the temples are multiple and smaller temples that showcases the rich history of Malta archipelago.

Our first destination is Ghar Dalam - an important prehistoric location discovered during the second half of the 19th century. Artefacts, human and animal bones were discovered during a number of excavations performed in its cave, which tell us about the historical past of the cave as well as of Malta's. The basal layer of this site is half a million years old, where fossil bones of small mammals, birds and other species where unearthed. Above this layer is made of pebbles, followed by the "deer" layer which believed to be 18,000 years old. The very top layer is known as the "cultural" layer which marks the existence of the first civilisation in Malta some 7400 years ago. Cave aside, you will find educational exhibition and display and a garden boasting

This layer is topped by a pebble layer, and on top of it there is the so-called ‘deer’ layer, dated to around 18,000 years ago. The top layer, or ‘cultural layer’, dates less than 10,000 years and holds evidence of the first humans on the Island. It was here that the earliest evidence of human settlement on Malta, some 7,400 years ago, was discovered. The site consists of a cave, a Victorian style exhibition and a didactic display as well as a garden planted with primitive vegetation.

The prehistoric temple tour continues to Hagar Qim & Mnajdra Temples. These temples were capped in limestone and are sitting on top of a hill. During the geological times of Oligocene and Miocene periods, it was said that the rocks in the island were deposited in one place, thus the temple is made of rocks and is surrounded by big rocks. Since its discovery, the place has been declared a Heritage Park. Less than a kilometre from the temple is the Hamrija Tower, a watchtower built by Grand Master Martin de Redin.
