Festivals
Festivities of great tradition, and of special devotion in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, are Holy Week held in the last week of Lent, Corpus Christi held in June and Pilgrimage of San Benito Abad in July. Also hugely popular is the Tenerife Carnival held in February/March. There are also many other religious celebrations held in this city and throughout the island all year round. During a visit to the island the tourist information offices can be asked for up to date information regarding celebratory dates.
Corpus Christi
The festival of Corpus Christi involves the streets being completely covered in an array of pictures and collages made from flowers, petals and leaves. Visitors can admire the works of art before the procession then marches through the town.
Pilgrimage of San Benito Abad
Among local celebrations is the Pilgrimage of San Benito Abad, which is held on the first Sunday of July, and is visited by people from all over the island. It has been declared a national tourist interest with competitions and prizes increasing the popularity of this urban festivity. The celebration is customarily marked by a small group of local women in traditional dress carrying fruit and flowers as an offering to the Saint.
The Hearts of Tejina
The Hearts of Tejina festival is extremely popular and unique. At the end of August, the men bring out their neighbourhood’s ‘heart’, decorated with bread, cakes and fruit. This is followed by a lively parade.
Festivity of Christ
Another significant religious celebration is the Festivity of Christ, which involves a fireworks display, is held on the 14th of September. At the end of July is the San Cristobal festivity, which is a significant celebration for the city.
