Vallehermoso
Overview:
Situated in the north of La Gomera island, Vallehermoso is the biggest municipality in terms of surface area. Here you will find terraces with small wheat fields, picturesque vineyards and breathtaking beaches. The inhabitants of La Gomera, in maximising the use of land, transformed the steep cliffs into a basis for sustainable living. These terraces add to the village's unique, yet breathtaking scenery. The village centre is built around the Church of Saint John the Baptist (San Juan Bautista), which dates back to the 1600's.
The municipal of Vallehermoso boasts a great variety of landscapes, ranging from the lush wetland forests in Epina, to the fertile gorges of El Ingenio and Macayo. Further south, astonishing places await, such as the volcano of La Caldera, La Dama and El Cercado. Thanks to the favourable climatic circumstances, a virtual oasis of palm trees forms the eastern part (Tazo, Alojera) of Vallehermoso, where much of La Gomera's palm honey is extracted.
The best and the most complicated water supply network can be found in the gorge of Vallehermoso. Ingenio and Macayo are the names of both tributaries that are formed higher up on the plateau. They join together where Vallehermoso lies. In the river delta, a reservoir called La Encantadora spans across 710,000 cubic meters; it gathers enough water to be well-filled in summer. There is also a second small reservoir, the Marichal Reservoir.
The walking paths of this area are very popular due to its beautiful surrounding. Whilst, the wines, the sweets, and the craft industry of Vallehermoso are highly regarded for their accurate handiwork and quality.
Sights:
The sights in Vallehermoso are mostly natural, such as the majestic Los Organos cliff. Alternatively, you can take a stroll in this lovely village overlooked by 650m high Roque Cano, exploring the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista church and chill out at the Plaza Constitución.
Los Órganos (The pipe organs) cliff
Along the coast near Vallehermoso, there is a uniquely shaped cliff line called Los Órganos- a basalt formation often referred to as the most beautiful of the Canaries. The cliffs of Los Órganos rise 80 meters high and are 200 meters wide. This natural work of art was countoured by volcanic lava masses, which cooled down in time. Erosion took care of the rest, and resulted in the cliffs being shaped like organ pipes. The entirety of Los Órganos can only be viewed from a boat. Many boat excursions can be organised from harbour towns such as Valle Gran Rey and Playa Santiago.
Beaches:
There is one beach in particular, where you can catch some rays, and swim in the sea.
Vallehermoso Beach
A beautiful cliff backdrop encircles the stunning beach near Vallehermoso. The beach is equipped with swimming pools, changing cabins, and showers, as well as a snack-bar. The Atlantic is a little rougher here, and it is only on some days, that experienced swimmers dare to enter the sea.
The adjacent swimming pool lies in the Parque Maritimo, and is situated behind the heavily-jointed coastline. From there, bathers can enjoy an enchanting view across the ocean.
