Puerto Rico
Overview
A haven for sun-worshippers and beach-lovers from across Europe, Puerto Rico’s constantly balmy climate and fine sandy beaches have made it one of the island’s best-established tourist resorts. Entirely man-made, some may argue that it has forsaken all traces of traditional culture (it once was a small fishing hamlet), but its infrastructure of towering apartment blocks can’t help but leave an impression on you. Practically impossible to evade the throngs of fellow visitors on dry land, the best way to get some peace and quiet is to a book a catamaran trip at the main harbour and hit the high seas for a spot of dolphin watching. Alternatively, if looking for sun, sand, sangria and affordable fun, you don’t have to venture very far along its teeming seafront. There isn’t much in the way of historical or cultural significance in Puerto Rico, as the economy has always relied on tourism alone.
How To Get There
By Bus:
Buses 1, 91 and 151 connect Las Palmas to Puerto Rico on a regular basis; journeys cost around €7.50. Buses 33, 39, 70 and 90 also provide a service from/to the nearby southern resorts.
By Car:
Driving from Las Palmas, take the GC-1 south west all the way along the coast, and the journey should take about an hour.
Activities
There are many activities to be enjoyed in the south of Gran Canaria and within the close proximity of Puerto Rico. Check out things to do in the nearby resorts of Puerto Mogan and Maspalomas. Also in Playa Taurito you can enjoy jetski, banana boat ride, parasailing and other thrill water rides. Many which transfer is provided to take you to enjoy the activities.
Beaches
Amadores Beach
The town’s most popular beach is the epitome of seaside tourism. A 30-minute walk south from the main centre, the first thing that strikes you is the fine sand, imported from the Caribbean. The clear cobalt waters are perfect for bathing, whilst a little further out, diving conditions are particularly favourable.
Although the tourism board has reaped considerable finanacial rewards through continuous expansion of infrastructure, areas such as its promenade, festooned with bars, restaurants, hotels and shops, can get a little claustrophobic. Competition for sunning spots on the beach is fierce, so make sure to head down early!
Playa de Puerto Rico
The golden sands of this beach were imported from the Sahara, and with temperatures here known to get very high, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the African desert. The sea breeze is usually enough to keep you cool though. There is plenty to do here, from jetskiing to glass-bottomed boat tours. There are plenty of bars and cafes to keep you satisfied and even a shopping centre nearby.
Restaurants
Tourists missing their respective national cuisines need not worry, as the streets are teeming with restaurants and pubs serving English, German, Chinese, Indian and Italian food, as well as plenty of Canarian food.
