Golfing in Gran Canaria

Mixing expertly-designed courses with breathtaking views, Gran Canaria is Tenerife’s closest golfing rival within the archipelago. The island has two of Spain’s most eminent, and contrasting, clubs- Real Club de Golf de las Palmas and El Cortijo Golf.

Real Club de Golf de las Palmas
Founded in 1891 by a group of British patrons, Real Club de Golf de las Palmas has the prestigious distinction of being Spain’s oldest golf course. Lying 400 metres above sea level, the course has a refined beauty complimented by spectacular panoramic views. Other facilities include two putting greens, a club shop, driving range and clubhouse with a restaurant and bar. Green fees from €55 for 18 holes in low season.

El Cortijo Golf
Situated only five minutes from Las Palmas, there’s no danger of play being cut short by bad light here, due to it being the only floodlit course in the archipelago. Comprised of grand lakes, bunkers and verdant fairways, this par 71, 18-hole course has been modelled on its American counterparts. Make sure to visit at night for an unforgettable experience.

Meloneras Golf
Sandwiched between Maspolamas and the harbour town of Pasito Blanco, this course is one of the best on the island. Opened in 2006, it offers breathtaking oceanic views from its undulating fairways. There is also a smattering of water hazards to challenge confident golfers (the handicap limit for the course is 30).

Other services include a 40-tee driving range, practise bunker and putting green. Regular green fees cost €95. Advance booking is essential.

Anfi Tauro Golf
Set in acres of verdant beauty and enclosed by the volcanic peaks of the neighbouring Tauro valley, the course feels instantly unique. Opened in 2006, this 18-hole championship affair was designed by renowned designer Robert von Hagge, receiving many plaudits for its ingenuity. If you feel a little overwhelmed, head over to the neighbouring 9-hole par-3 which is equally resplendent, if less demanding.

Other facilities include a health spa providing the perfect massage after a hard round. Beginners can also take lessons at its in-house academy which cost €50 per hour. Green fees cost €100 (non- member) for 18 holes.
