Overview of Costa Calma

If you fancy a long stretch of golden beaches with lots of sandy spaces to sunbathing on and a non-rowdy resort to spend your well-deserved holiday on Fuerteventura, then look no further than Costa Calma.

This purpose-built resort was constructed in the 1970’s around a small the village and along its 2km of golden sandy beaches. The surrounding barren and oasis-like landscapes adds to the “in the middle of nowhere” feel to Costa Calma. Hotels and apartment blocks are built along the golden sandy beaches, meaning there’s no real center, dispersing the holiday makers along the length of the resort.

Apart from its long beaches nestling in the calm corner of the coast, there are no particular interesting sights or cultural attractions to be found here on Costa Calma. There are however, a number of interesting viewpoints (miradors) nearby offering stunning views of the coast and the inland. The family-friendly holiday resort also marks the beginning of the longest and most remote beaches of Fuerteventura - Playas de Sotaventos. This beautiful part of the island with fine white sand beaches and constant winds is the mecca for kitesurfer and windsurfers alike. Take up a kitesurfing course or venture around the Jandia  peninsular on an quad bike or buggy safari adventure. Not far away is Oasis Park, an animal park cum botanical garden where you and the little ones can easily spend the whole day in.

Costa Calma, literally translated as “Calm Coast” offers just the tranquility you need for your vacation.

History and development

Costa Calma was a small village named Cañada del Rio prior to its tourism development in the 70’s. Traces of the village are hardly seen today. The local authority has asserted care however in ensuring the the oasis-like nature of the area is maintained, with trees and green palmy areas allocated along the lengthy resort. This helps preserving the existing ecosystem, floras and faunas in the area with several species of hoopoes can still be spotted.
