Shopping in Funchal

Souvenier shop in Monte, Funchal, MadeiraMadeira arts and crafts

With so much on offer in a relatively small city, Funchal’s shopping opportunities are unparalleled. The city has everything from local goods and wines to independent fashion retailers to modern shopping malls to traditional markets and bazaars. Here visitors will find everything from traditional artistry to souvenirs such as basketry, embroidery, metalwork and woollen garments. Even if shopping’s not your thing, the fruit markets and bazaars provide an excellent chance to witness (and photograph) local life in this most colourful of cities. Below is just a sample of the larger shopping areas and local produce markets that Funchal has to offer.

There are also many tiny outlets dotted throughout the city which sell traditional produce common to Madeira such as local wines, flowers, arts and crafts and leatherwork.

Mercado dos Lavradores

Tile mural in Mercado Dos Lavadores, Funchal, Madeira

Whether you’re looking to buy something or just out for a stroll, this local market simply has to be checked out! This hive of colour sound and activity is arranged over two floors and packed full of flowers, fruits, spices, meats and fish for sale. This is where the locals come to buy their produce and should be the first stop on any visitor’s itinerary. Whether it’s culture or you simply just the chance to watch local people bartering prices, the Mercado dos Lavradores is the beating heart of Funchal.

Recently there have been complaints about dishonest fruit sellers upstairs. Unless you are great in bargaining and being indifferent to ‘guilt trap’, we suggest other places for real shopping.
