Description:
Malta is a historical island that is built on bygone yet famous temples and rock structures. The capital of Malta, Valletta is an example of how historical the Island is. Valletta is often dubbed as an open museum or II-Belt because of its 16th century buildings. Most of the structures in the city were built during the time of the Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. The designs of the structures and buildings reflect styles from Mannerist, Neo-Classical and Modern architecture. In general, the structures surrounding the area followed Baroque style. Some parts of the city were damaged during World War II and in 1980, UNESCO cited Valletta as a world heritage site. In 1565, the city of Valletta fought hard against the oppressive Ottoman Empire and won with Jean Parisot de la Valette as a leader. The city’s name was after him. The Order of Saint John also gave the city a name and called it 'Humilissima Civitas Valletta' or The Most Humble City of Valletta. In Italian, the city is called Citta' Umilissima. Aside from its palaces with baroque designs, Valletta is remembered as a city with bastions and ravelins that protected it against invaders and churches made of rocks that still stand until today. To date, the city of Valletta is called Superbissima - Most Proud City.
A tour to the Grand Harbour is also necessary in order to appreciate the panorama that the harbour and the Barracca Gardens present. In the area, you can find St. John's Co-Cathedral, the cathedral where the painting of Caravaggio depicting John’s beheading is being displayed.
